I Am European

Stories of Migration – Education based on experience

The DEAR project I Am European reached out to young people with innovative educational proposals. At their core were real stories of migration, and direct connections with migrant youth.

With empathy-increasing action such as visual stories, simulations, speaker tours, and virtual reality experiences, young people became more aware of the drivers behind migration.

Over 1.2 million young people across Europe reported that they had taken action to promote integration, acceptance, and mutual understanding. With them, 1 280 teachers, youth workers, and other educators increased their awareness of migration through global education activities.

From personal tales of discrimination to the pursuit of integration, the video series Young Migrants Share Their Stories went beyond simple narratives to explore the complexities of identity, belonging, and the social hurdles encountered by people with a migration background. Meanwhile, a simulation story enabled Estonian viewers to experience choices as Ukrainian refugees and learn more about forced migration.

Additionally, 51 online and onsite speaker tours engaged more than 8 000 participants by facilitating face-to-face contact with young migrants and refugees.

Sharing information and subjects’ first-hand experience with locals, particularly in remote areas, these city tours facilitated direct encounters and spaces for discussion.
