More than 30 social media influencers with strong followings joined forces with SPARK! ClimAct to leverage their social media presence and bring urgent global issues to devices across Europe. The project worked with social media creators like Elizabeth Wathuti, a Kenyan climate activist and the founder of the Green Generation Initiative.

Elizabeth wrote an open letter which collected 70 000+ signatures, calling on leaders to act swiftly and help frontline communities obtain the help they need:

“Communities on the frontline of the climate crisis […] are not responsible for causing the climate crisis – but they are suffering its impacts right now. […] The global community must not simply abandon them to their fate.”

Showing the strong interconnections between different global challenges, Wathuti tells the story of a remote region of Kenya, Wajir. There, four consecutive failed rainy seasons have led to terrifying levels of food and water insecurity, thousands of animals dying of thirst and starvation, and girls being pulled out of school because their families could no longer afford fees. Babies are failing to thrive because their mothers do not have milk to feed them, and natural ecosystems have been pushed beyond breaking point.

Through festivals such as Glastonbury, film screenings, and a European trip, where Elisabeth also met with European decision makers ahead of COP27, ordinary people were invited to support her call for climate action and support campaigns such as #LossAndDamage in view of COP27, and #MakePollutersPay in view of COP28.
