Frame-Voice-Report!

New regulations in Finland to counter human trafficking

The DEAR project Frame-Voice-Report! supported the campaign ‘Different Stories’ (Toisenlaisia Tarinoita), run by the Finnish NGO FinnWID. The campaign showcased the story of Ithohan c, a former victim of trafficking from Nigeria. With her personal activism, she spoke out about women trafficking, its root causes, and the structural global factors that produce it.

As a human trafficking survivor, Itohan c provided first-hand evidence on how poverty and poor education exposes young women to risk. She also described how such tragic stories affect their communities.

The DEAR project Frame-Voice-Report!, supported the campaign giving voice to the voiceless, organised journalist trainings, study visits, and background materials. The project also cooperated with the Finnish national anti-trafficking network and relevant ministries and government agencies. Journalists shared the story in the media, reaching around 40% of the country’s population.

The campaign had an impact on policy. The Finnish government appointed a Anti-Trafficking coordinator with an action team. New legislation is being prepared (see the Action Plan) to reflect the situation of children of victims of human trafficking and their legal status.
