DEAR Projects
Empowering teachers and learners

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is transformative, empowering, and learner-centred. As a pedagogical approach, GCE helps young people and adults develop awareness and critical understanding of global interdependencies. And it acts on three dimensions of learning:

▪ cognitive (critical understanding),

▪ socio-emotional (sense of belonging and solidarity), and

▪ behavioural (action for change).

Many DEAR projects helped reform education, at school and outside. They worked to bridge school with society, and connected learning with action.

Entry points to support young people’s learning and agency on global issues are manyfold: Build Solid Ground focused on global housing, land, and urban issues. Recognize & Change worked with high school students on the different forms of discrimination and  the origin of cultural stereotypes. Get up and Goals produced a World History Textbook to help teachers and learners deconstruct Euro-centrism. Global Issues-Global Subjects, Global Education Goes Local, Culture for Peer Learning, Walk the Global Walk helped teachers and students learn about the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 25 DEAR-funded projects through the 2016 Call involved overall:

200 000 teachers and educators

1 million young people

Hundreds of schools

15 higher education institutions

among them… University of Edinburgh (UK), University of Split (Croatia), Technological University Dublin (Ireland), Comenius University (Slovakia), University of Bologna (Italy), and Instituto Politecnico de Viana do Castelo (Portugal).
