Migrant workers compensated
With the help of the project Make ICT Fair, a tech company producing printers and external hard drives for a major Western ICT Group, had to compensate migrant workers. It was made to reimburse $10 million for illegal recruitment fees to 10 000 migrant workers in Thailand. A fee of 6 000 to 12 000 Baht (€158 to €316, or the equivalent of 30 – 60 days’ wages) was paid by the company to compensate the forced labour of many migrant workers from Myanmar. According to Reuters, this is the biggest compensation of recruitment fees ever recorded. The project contributed to this rare achievement through its partner – Electronic Watch. Their effective advocacy and connections with the Migrant Workers Rights Network allowed them to collect workers’ testimonies and advocate for erasing their illegally collected debts.
