Shaping Fair Cities

Project complete, from December 2016 to June 2020

What is it about?

“Shaping Fair Cities” highlighted the role that cities and sub-national governments need to play in the implementation of SDGs and Agenda 39. Focusing on SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), the project promoted a critical understanding of Local Authorities’ (LA) and citizens’ roles and responsibilities in relation to the interdependent world. It focused on the importance of effectively involving LAs in Agenda 2030 to ensure that local policies are in line with the principle of “Policy Coherence for Development”.

What changes does this project inspire?

14 Local Authorities are better able to plan and localise SDGs at regional and city level. Four regional governments, 18 municipalities, 90 CSO and 200 university students have improved their understanding of sustainable development challenges, especially at local level. Eight EU Member States and two EU partner countries have increased their capacity to incorporate local plans and indicators into national 2030 plans. Finally, 3,8 million inhabitants of major cities in eight EU Member States have become more aware about SDGs and the importance of implementing them at local level.
