Rural DEAR Agenda

Project complete, from January 2015 to March 2018

What is it about?

“Rural DEAR Agenda” introduced and reinforced the Global Citizenship (GCE)/Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) agenda in European rural areas, contributing to the European Year of Development 2015. It proposed better actions to change social attitudes towards sustainable development.
The project developed and tested a participatory model for GCE/DEAR local plans of action, with inclusive, innovative and effective approaches. Development cooperation professionals and teachers were actively involved in the creation of project proposals, the analysis and evaluation of pilot projects and their results.

What changes does this project inspire?

The project successfully created an Agenda for Development Education, tailored to the needs of rural areas in Europe. The “Rural DEAR Agenda” serves as a manual for development education awareness-raising, sensitisation and other educational actions, with a participatory and networked approach.
As a foundation for the agenda, “Rural DEAR Agenda” ran and published an analysis/study of development education in the many European rural areas/territories that participated in the project. The study included recommendations for more effective and impactful development education actions.
“Rural DEAR Agenda” created a rural DEAR/Global Citizenship Education (GCE) network to exchange methods and tools. Overall, it worked for a change of social attitude towards sustainable development, encouraging responsible and ethical consumption, public procurement and fair trade.
