#OurFoodOurFuture

Project complete, from March 2020 to August 2023

What is it about?

“Our Food, Our Future” advocates for fair agricultural supply chains and sustainable food systems, which do not exploit workers and exacerbate the climate crisis through the misuse of land. In solidarity with migrant workers and smallholders around the globe, it stands up against environmental degradation and human rights violations. With the slogan “We are hungry for justice!”, #OurFoodOurFuture is fostering a youth movement through creativity, empathy, vision of change and unity. The project holds talks with decision-makers, collects facts and data with the help of studies, and puts public pressure on politicians and companies to change the rules and laws around how food is produced.

What changes does this project inspire?

“Our Food, Our Future” is re-shaping the discourse on ethical food production, sustainable food supply chains and migrant workers’ rights. Journalists, bloggers and rising social media personalities are being mobilised to shed light on the process between the farm and the table. Thousands of young people across Europe are influencing policies and corporate decisions, through youth labs, social media campaigns, “See-Judge-Act” roleplays and “Disco soup days”, to the beat of music.

The campaign contributed to a strong EU-wide due diligence Directive. It included an e-mail petition to the European Commission Vice-President and two EU Commissioners, while their staff was drafting the Directive. The petition highlighted unfair buying practices and the need for a gender-responsive approach in agricultural supply chains.

Enhancing understanding and empathy for migrants and farmers across the world, the youth-led #OurFoodOurFuture campaign is increasing support of EU development policies that promote more sustainable and ethical food systems.
