Make Fruit Fair!

Project complete, from March 2015 to February 2018

What is it about?

“Make Fruit Fair!” developed EU citizens’ awareness of the precarious situation of plantation workers and small farmers producing tropical fruit for the EU market. Its campaigns called on consumers to select fair trade products and other joint actions to promote fair trade approaches. The project urged corporate and political decision-makers to ensure fair conditions in the tropical fruit sector, calling for basic living standards and decent work for all, respect for human rights and fair trade relations.

What changes does this project inspire?

Mobilising citizens to denounce unfair trading practices, “Make Fruit Fair!” contributed to a number of policy changes: the first European Commission Communication that includes a provision on accessibility for non-EU producers (Jan 2016), a European Parliament report calling for legislation to support a redress system for non-EU producers in terms of market access (June 2016), an Agri Market Task Force report calling for fair trade framework legislation at EU level (Nov 2016) and Council Conclusions stating that “[voluntary initiatives] could be complemented, inter alia, by a regulatory approach at EU level” (Dec 2016).
